The Aquaculture Department of FPIK held an International General Lecture with the title “Seaweed Tissue Culture and Bioprocess” on Wednesday, 19 October 2022 via the Zoom platform. Seaweed is one of the commodities that has promising prospects, but the availability of high-quality and high-quality seeds and their utilization still needs to be a concern. The activity presented 2 resource persons who were experts in the field of tissue culture and biprocessing, namely Dr. Gabriel Tirtawijaya who is a researcher at Silla University, Korea, Dr. Maya Saptiani who is an alumnus of FPIK Diponegoro University. This event was attended by more than 170 online participants, both from the UNDIP academic community and from other agencies.
The first presentation by Dr. Gabriel, he explained about seaweed and its classification, the tissue culture process, its advantages and disadvantages and the latest research related to seaweed tissue culture. then continued by Dr. Maya, she explained about biotechnology and seaweed bioprocess. Seaweed can be used for several things, such as: direct food, food additives, animal feed, pharma-nutraceutical, bio-stimulant. Seaweed extraction can be carried out by several methods, including acid and alkaline hydrolysis, water, conventional solvent extraction, and green extraction. In carrying out biotechnology and bioprocessing, the objectives of these activities must be determined without forgetting economic factors.
