Adjunct Professor Public Lecture at TBPK: FPIK Undip Welcomes Prof. Ooi from Monash University Malaysia

Semarang, 8 November 2025 — The Study Program of Fisheries and Marine Technology and Business (TBPK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Diponegoro University, held a series of activities under the Adjunct Professor Program featuring international guest lecturer Assoc. Prof. Ooi Chien Wei from Monash University Malaysia. The program ran from 27 October to 7 November 2025, comprising thematic lectures, academic discussions, and research consultation sessions.

The highlight of the program was a Public Lecture held on 31 October 2025 at the Teluk Awur Campus in Jepara. The event attracted students, lecturers, researchers, and faculty representatives, and carried the theme:
“Microalgae Biorefinery: Recovery of Bioactive Compounds and Sustainable Marine Biotechnology.”

During the lecture, Prof. Ooi presented the latest advancements in the use of microalgae as a source of high-value bioactive compounds, including astaxanthin, lutein, and fucoxanthin. He also emphasized various innovations in bioprocessing technologies—such as supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, aqueous two-phase systems, and cutting-edge ionic liquid–based approaches—highlighting their potential to enhance extraction efficiency and sustainability at an industrial scale.

Prof. Ooi further elaborated on the promising applications of marine biorefinery concepts across multiple sectors, including health, cosmetics, nutritional supplements, and environmentally friendly biotechnology. He shared insights from several applied studies, such as biosensor development, biodegradable bioplastics, and fisheries waste utilization through valorization strategies.

The public lecture drew more than 120 participants, including TBPK students, FPIK Undip lecturers, and students from various study programs who are interested in marine biotechnology. The event was opened by faculty representatives, who underscored the importance of international academic collaboration in strengthening the quality of education, research, and innovation within TBPK Undip.

TBPK Head of Study Program, Dr. Eko Susanto, stated that the Adjunct Professor Program serves as a strategic initiative to expand research networks and enhance the competencies of academic staff and students.
“This program not only broadens our understanding of modern bioprocess technologies but also opens opportunities for long-term research collaboration between Undip and Monash University,” he noted.

Throughout his visit, Prof. Ooi also provided research mentoring for final-year students, discussed potential international publication pathways, and explored collaborative research opportunities in fisheries and marine biotechnology.

Through this Adjunct Professor Program, TBPK Undip aims to elevate academic quality, strengthen global research partnerships, and reinforce its position as an adaptive and internationally competitive study program in marine technology and sustainable bioproduct development.
