Semarang – The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) has once again demonstrated its commitment to expanding international partnerships through an academic staff exchange program. Yusuf Jati Wijaya, S.Kel., M.Sc., M.Si., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Oceanography at FPIK Undip, successfully completed an Academic Staff Exchange program at The University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan, held from May 7–17, 2026.
The program was part of efforts to strengthen international research collaboration while enhancing academic and methodological capacity in the field of oceanography. During his stay in Japan, Yusuf Jati Wijaya joined the Physical Oceanography Laboratory and collaborated directly with Prof. Yukiharu Hisaki on a research project focusing on the impact of tropical cyclones on Indonesian marine waters.
Through this collaboration, both institutions conducted various scientific activities, including research methodology discussions, research protocol exchanges, utilization of laboratory facilities, and the preparation of joint scientific publications. The collaboration is expected to produce at least one scientific article to be published in a reputable international journal indexed by Scopus or Web of Science in the Q1 category.
In addition to research publication outcomes, the program also strengthened the institutional relationship between FPIK Undip and The University of the Ryukyus through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) as an initial step toward developing sustainable research collaboration in the future.

Yusuf Jati Wijaya stated that the academic staff exchange program represents a concrete effort to strengthen the internationalization of higher education institutions while improving the quality of academic research.
“This academic staff exchange program opens wider opportunities for collaboration in oceanographic research development, particularly related to ocean dynamics and environmental changes in tropical regions,” he said.
The program is also aligned with FPIK Undip’s strategy to support the World Class University (WCU) agenda, particularly in strengthening international cooperation, academic mobility, and enhancing global research reputation. Moving forward, FPIK Undip plans to expand its academic partnerships with universities across Asia, Europe, and America to support internationally competitive marine research and innovation.
